Two Styles?
In the article that Lahiri wrote about her life as an Indian-American she mentioned that she always tried to hide her cultural background to the other kids. She learns from both cultures and learns to be proud of being both when she become older. When she was young she was afraid of her friends knowing about her other cultural background but when she became older she was proud to have another culture affect her as a person. Since she is the first generation of children after her parents moved from India to America she was more exposed to Indian cultures. As compared to other families which have already stayed in America for a couple of generations, which would be exposed to less Indian cultures and more easily blend into the American culture. Yet for Lahiri she has the same struggle as other immigrants do, trying to blend in without showing their former cultural backgrounds. Lahiri uses a style which is very informative and entertaining. The figurative language she uses seems to be more appealing to me than it would be if she used less figurative words.
